Pet Blood Bank UK
At Vets Now, we are hugely proud to support Pet Blood Bank UK.
Launched in 2007, PBB is a ground-breaking and unique not-for-profit organisation providing a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK - and it’s the only charity of its kind in the country.
The aim of PBB is to advance animal health and welfare and to relieve suffering by providing quick and convenient access to blood. Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring along their canine companions to give blood at one of the charity’s many sessions.
The blood is then taken to PBB’s state-of-the-art processing centre in Loughborough where it’s separated into red blood cells and plasma products, and then stored ready for despatch to vets as and when they need it.
In addition to providing blood and ancillary products to the profession, PBB conducts lectures and workshops at conferences and regional CPD events to increase awareness and advance transfusion medicine.
As a charity, the team are passionate about what they do. The core members of staff are based in the Midlands but supported by regional teams across the country. The session team collect blood five days a week and, all in all, PBB dispatch more than 4,000 blood products annually.
So that the charity can concentrate on its blood banking activities, Vets Now supports PBB by providing a range of services including recruitment. Vets Now staff also help the charity with fundraising activities and by hosting sessions at their hospitals and support office in Dunfermline.
