Weekend Referral Nurse Job – Manchester

Salary up to £25,000 pro rata

Make a difference, be the Vet Nurse you trained to be!

We have a requirement for an experienced Referral Nurse to join our team in Manchester working 20 hours per week. Our state of the art Manchester hospital has been opened 8 months and our case load is building all the time. Weekends in-particular are proving to be very busy with on average 13 intensive in-patients plus two consulting vets kept busy with emergencies and some urgent referral cases. Weekends can be fast-paced at times and a cool head under pressure and ability to multi-task are essential!

The Hospital

The hospital is purpose built, with dedicated species specific wards, ICU, barrier and isolation wards and large, open plan emergency treatment area. There are two theatres off the large prep area and a radiography and CT suite. We have the capacity and equipment to perform all emergency procedures and care for critically ill patients. The hospital accepts referrals in ECC, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery and Medicine and has a visiting Cardiologist and MRI.

Our People

At weekends you will work with our ECC specialist and OOH veterinary surgeons. The nursing team is still relatively small, but they are a very friendly and like-minded team of nurses that all strive for gold-standard. We have just achieved OUTSTANDING in the RCVS awards scheme for our nursing care and are very proud of the level of patient care we provide. We also have two weekend animal care assistants to help with patient care, in-house blood tests and other procedures and maintain the cleanliness of the hospital and equipment.

The Role

At weekends we see only emergency cases so this role would suit someone with a keen interest in emergency and critical care nursing. You would be caring for the hospitalised patients which often involves using feeding tubes, active wound drainage, oxygen therapy, indwelling urinary catheters and thoracic drains and you are responsible for triaging patients as they arrive if the veterinary surgeon is not available. You could also be involved in any emergency surgical cases that were taken to theatre. Full training will be given in all aspects of the role.

In time as the hospital grows there will be the possibility of more hours and a move to other positions within the hospital and we regularly have locum shifts for holiday cover that you could assist with if more hours were desirable
