Diary of a cutting edger: Putting together the final pieces of the ECC jigsaw

  • Cutting Edge

Earlier this year six vets embarked on Vets Now’s pioneering Cutting Edge programme. One of those, Emma Passmore, has been writing a diary about her experiences on the 10-week induction in emergency and critical care.

In her final entry, Emma tells how the team got on in their last week of lectures and learning.

It's our 10th and final week of Cutting Edge. The time has almost come to head out into the big Vets Now world.

To say we're excited but also a little nervous would be an understatement.

This week we were asked to present the most interesting cases we'd worked on during our in-clinic block. This involved putting together a presentation and discussing how we had approached the clinical situations to which we were exposed.

The presentations were attended by some of Vets Now's specialists who offered expert counselling and guidance.

This was a fantastic learning process for all of us.

There were also a few final emergency and critical care topics to be covered. These lectures were all very informative and provided the final pieces of the jigsaw of our Cutting Edge experience.

Throughout the week we were consistently reminded about the support networks we have at our disposal and who we can turn to for clinical or operational assistance whatever the time of night or day.

This was really encouraging. But equally encouraging was that, as a group, we all committed to supporting each other. We ended the course knowing we will always have our fellow Cutting Edgers to turn to.

Needless to say our Cutting Edge induction journey ended with a good, old-fashioned night out. This was the perfect way to cap off a fantastic and hugely productive 10 weeks — with lots of laughs, lots of stories and some exchanging of gifts.

Thanks must go to Aoife O'Sullivan and Malishia Connolly for their incredible support and guidance throughout the programme.

They really do make Cutting Edge first class.
